Architectural Lighting Project

Iowa Department of Transportation Adair Rest Area
Adair County, IA

'Prairie Columns' are a series of light columns that lead visitors into the rest area building. Artfully designed, using pattern-cut steel on terra-cotta 'soil' sections, the functional lighting helps tell the story behind soil conservation. This "Art-in-Transit" commission for the Iowa DOT's rest area in Adair County, Iowa is based on the life of Henry A. Wallace and the first soil conservation district in the county. "Prairie Columns" are a series of light columns that lead visitors into the rest area building. Artfully designed, using pattern-cut steel on terra-cotta "soil" sections, the functional lighting helps tell the story behind soil conservation. The light columns are each 24" in diameter, and range in height from 15' for the year 1850 to 10' for the year 2000. The sequence of diminishing heights reflects the vanishing layer of topsoil and native vegetation over the years.
